Matamata Backpackers is a chill little hostel set in the heart of middle earth. With great facilities and a cozy, quirky interior. We offer a fully equipped kitchen, indoor and outdoor dining, BBQ facilities, large lounge with a range of free movies and laundry facilities.

Linen and small valuable lockers supplied in all rooms. Please bring your own padlock. 15 minutes drive to the Hobbiton Movie set or a 5 minute walk to the information center (Hobbiton pickup/drop off point). Close to supermarkets, cafes and shops what more could you want!

Hostel Amenities

We are a small hostel. Our maximum capacity is for 44 people. If you are after a group booking please contact us directly. We do not have big travel groups or busloads coming through. So great environment for solo travellers to meet each other.
  • WiFi - Free WiFi available throughout the backpackers.
  • Kitchen - Fully equipped guest kitchen for self-catering.
  • Laundry - Fully equipped guest laundry.
  • Bike Hire - We have bikes onsite for hire and also costumes to hire.
  • Parking - Free parking on site and more side street parking.
  • BBQ - Plenty of outdoor seating and a BBQ available for the guests.
  • Dining - We have a dining room for the guests with a nice, warm fireplace.
  • TV Room - Penty of entertainment on a wet day, we have DVDs and Netflix. We also have a book exchange.
  • Smoking - Rooms are smoke-free, you can smoke outside.

FAQs

  • What time is check in?
    2pm-8pm. We have luggage storage if needed to check in early.
  • How do I check in after hours?
    Contact us directly via phone or email and we can arrange for after hours check in.
  • What time are reception hours? Can I check in late?
    Reception hours run 8am-12am and then 2pm-8pm.
  • What time is check out? Can I have a late checkout?
    Check out is 10 am. We do not allow late check out during months October-April. Please let us know if you require late check out otherwise.
  • Do you offer female-only dorms?
    No. We don't offer female only dorms, sorry.
  • What payment methods are accepted?
    We accept VISA, Mastercard, Unionpay and cash. Payment on arrival is preferred. We do require credit details if booking over the phone.
  • How long does it take to get into town?
    5 minutes walking to the I-site restaurant's/shops and supermarkets.
  • Can I drink alcohol in the hostel?
    Yes. And a alcohol shop is next door.
  • Do you have free WiFi?
    Yes, Free Unlimited.
  • How can I get to the Waterfall?
    From November to March we offer a shuttle service at 10am. We also offer Bike hire for $15 a day.
  • Is bedding supplied?
    Yes. Bedding is supplied. Towels are available for hire if needed.
  • Are there any shops or places to eat nearby?
    Yes there are many restaurant and all the necessary shops within 5 minutes' walk.
