With arguably the best location in Taupo we are just a couple of streets away from the busiest bars and restaurants and the shores of the stunning Great Lake Taupo – yet far enough away to get a good night’s sleep. Urban is only minutes away from the bus stop and supermarkets and there is plenty of free off-street parking available. We have a fun, cheap house guest Bar as well as Free, unlimited WiFi and computers, comfy beds and hot, high-pressure showers.

Hostel Amenities

We have 20 rooms and can sleep up to 100 guests in a selection of dormitory rooms as well as a few private rooms. The biggest dorm room sleeps 16 and smallest sleeps 4, some have ensuite bathrooms, others share facilities. We have 4 private rooms with ensuite bathrooms.
  • WIFI - Free unlimited WiFi is available throughout the retreat.
  • Kitchen - Fully equipped kitchen, free oil and spices for our guests to cook up a storm.
  • Storage - Store your luggage safely on site at our reception.
  • Lounge - Cosy, communal lounge with TV & movies for you to enjoy.
  • Bar - Our in-house bar offers a great atmosphere and affordable drinks with cocktails ranging from $5-$10.
  • BBQ - Outdoor BBQ and every night we make our delicious chilli for only $5 ($9 with a wine or beer).


  • What time is check in?
    Guests can check in from 2pm until 9pm at reception. We also provide a free late check in service after 9pm.
  • How do I check in after hours?
    Upon your arrival, you can ring us free on 0800-872-261 when you are outside the hostel.
  • What time are reception hours?
    Reception hours are from 8am-9pm.
  • Can I check in late?
    Please let us know upon booking if you require a late check in and we can arrange this free of charge with our 24/7 on site night porters.
  • What time is check out?
    Check out is by 10am. Can I have a late checkout? A late check out can be arranged for a fee.
  • Do you offer female-only dorms?
    Usually we do not but we can do our best to keep a dorm all female upon request.
  • What payment methods are accepted?
    We take cash and New Zealand debit cards free of charge. We accept all major credit cards and travel cards that use Visa, Mastercard, American Express or Union Pay for a 2% surcharge on the total purchase.
  • How long does it take to get into town?
    Walking into the centre of Taupo can take between 2 minutes and 10 minutes depending on where in town you're headed.
  • Can I drink alcohol in the hostel?
    We have the cheapest bar in Taupo with happy hour between 7pm-8pm. However, as we are a licensed premise with the bar on site, guests are unable to bring their own alcohol onto the premises due to New Zealand liquor laws.
  • Do you have free WiFi?
    Our Wifi is free for all paying guests all throughout the hostel and premise.
  • How can I get to the lake?
    We are located only 2 blocks from the lake, our main entrance is facing away from the lake. When leaving our hostel, if you turn left, and take the first left at the roundabout and continue straight, past McDonalds, then turn left onto Lake Terrace with the lake to your right. There is free parking located all along Lake Terrace.
  • Is bedding supplied?
    All bedding and sheets are provided and ready made on the bed for guests to check in, we also supply towels for a charge of $2 each.
  • Are there any shops or places to eat nearby?
    We have a large variety of shops and food spots to eat within walking distance of the accommodation, including a Pak N’ Save grocery store just a 5-minutes walk away. Some of Taupo’s most popular restaurants are within a 5-minutes’ walk as well with plenty of options overlooking the lake on Roberts street.

Urgent Coronavirus Update

Anyone that has arrived into New Zealand from Monday 16th March 1am is required to self-isolate for 14 days.  If you do not do this you will be deported out of New Zealand if you are caught. If you need advice you can call the health line  0800 358 5453 or +64 9 358 5453  Do not enter a hostel, a hospital or a doctors clinic instead call the health line if you think you have the coronavirus.  If you need somewhere to self-isolate we might be able to help you so send an email to [email protected]co.nz.  Many hostels are now checking your passports to see when you have entered the country and will report you to the police if you are not following the New Zealand requirements.
