With more than 1.1 Million visitors each year the Botanic Gardens are one of Christchurch’s most popular and well-loved attractions.
#2 Canterbury Museum
Located directly outside of the Botanic Gardens, so why not visit both at the same time. Experience New Zealand’s rich cultural and natural history heritage. Rare Maori artefacts and the stories behind them will fascinate you. For only a small coin donation (not mandatory). Perfect for a cold winter day.
#3 Sumner Beach
Sumner beach is a great place to experience the outdoors around Christchurch! Whether you enjoy long walks on the beach, relaxing on the beach side or cool down and have a swim. There are also restaurants, cafés and an Ice cream parlour for refreshments. And only a 10 – 15 minute bus ride from the city centre.
#4 Taylors Mistake – Awaroa / Godley Head Walk
From the Taylors Mistake car park make your way behind the beach to the start of the Pilgrims Way Coastal Track. The track climbs up to the headland and the historic Godley Head coastal defence battery. From here the Godley Head Gun Emplacements Track carries on around the nose of the headland, past the historic military buildings including the Battery Observation posts located at the entrance to Lyttelton Harbour. Great views of the city and coastline south can be had from the headland.
#5 Punting on the Avon
Punting from the Antigua Boat Sheds landing. Your Edwardian Punter will guide you quietly past trailing willows, woodlands and leafy banks as you absorb the beauty of Christchurch’s Botanic Gardens. Punting on the beautiful Avon River is an iconic Christchurch attraction not to be missed. Each Punting tour is 30 minutes duration with informative commentary, and you are returned to your point of departure. And is available as shared punts, or private punts.
