Skotel Alpine Resort is located in Whakapapa Village at the foot of Mount Ruapehu. Conveniently located near Whakapapa skifield during the ski season (June to October), within 1km of Tongariro National Park Whakapapa Visitor Centre and at the entrance to the Taranaki Falls Trail walk. The Mount Ruapehu ski area is a 6km drive up the mountain from the Village.

Skotel Alpine Resort is a 3 hour drive from Hamilton Airport, 4.5 hours from the Auckland and Wellington Airports.

The hotel is the ideal base for exploring the UNESCO world heritage park – and the many hiking and biking trails in the area.  From the hotel you can walk to Taranaki Falls, Tawhai Falls, Tama Lakes and for those up for a day trail walk, the Tongariro Alpine Crossing. 

After an exciting day hiking, biking, skiing (Jun-Oct) or sight-seeing guests can enjoy a refreshing sauna, a relaxing spa, or unwind over a drink or a meal at the Skotel Restaurant and Bar.

  • Is there luggage storage?
    Available for guests checking in or checking out or for those guests who wish us to hold their surplus luggage while they undertake one of the longer walks.
  • What are the reception hours?
    7 days a week open 7am till 8pm. If arriving outside these hours please advise at the time of booking
  • Is there a tour desk?
    Staff can arrange bus and tour bookings as well as provide advice on local activities, restaurants and walking tracks.
  • Is there somewhere to eat?
    Skotel Bar & Restaurant is a fully licensed restaurant showcasing New Zealand local produce and boasts a full a la carte dinner menu. From cold winter night warmers to summer BBQ’s, we include old favourites with creative modern dishes. Breakfast is full buffet including cooked and continential options Dinner hours are from 6pm to 9pm except in April, May and June 6pm- 8.30pm when the restaurant may close a little earlier. The bar is open from 4.00pm with flexible closing hours depending on demand
